Day 5: Elworthy to Challacombe (30.5 miles)
Almost there after today! Another epic trek just over 30 miles in length, so much for 6 Marathons, each day has been ‘ultra distance’. Marching along the B3224 for most of the day was a challenge in itself, as we were constantly dodging cyclists riding in their own ultra ‘Gran Fondo’. Meeting family along the way boosted moral (which surprisingly isn’t low at all!) first Mr Smith’s Mum and Dad, then his brother, followed by Mrs Wightman with Mr Wightman’s Mum. We got our first glimpse of the sea on the Devon/Somerset border before we turned off-road and walked over the moor towards Challacombe. The run in today was beautiful as we descended through fields of cows and sheep, with one lamb taking a particular fancy to Mr Wightman’s leg and nibbled at his shoes.
The best end to a day’s walking so far, effortlessly walking up hills and through fields to a lovely church, just outside the village of Challacombe.
See some of you tomorrow for the final stretch, Challacombe to Woolacombe.
